Wind Power
Silk® is putting wind to work. We've offset all of the electricity used to produce Silk Soymilk and other Silk products with clean, renewable wind power. That’s right – we said wind.
Wind Works
We're not just talking about a little breeze. The amount of wind power Silk Soymilk is purchasing will prevent 16,000 tons of greenhouse gasses from entering our atmosphere.
How Does it Work?
The energy that runs our homes and businesses comes from a variety of sources including coal, nuclear and hydroelectric power. Nationally, the facilities that produce that power feed it into a large pool of energy. This pool is comprised of all types of energy like coal, water, wind, etc. Every time we turn on a light in our house or crank the air conditioner on a hot day, we drain energy from that pool. We don't have a choice of what kind of power we drain out of the pool – we just have to take the mix that comes through the power lines. But we do have a way to choose how the energy we use gets put back into the pool. Silk Soymilk is making sure that only 100 percent clean, pure wind energy goes back into the power pool to replace what we take from it. If enough of us make that commitment, we make the pool cleaner for everyone!
Why It's Important
The most common forms of energy we use today pollute our environment. Replacing energy usage with clean, non-polluting methods like wind power or solar power will help ensure a cleaner, healthier environment. In addition, some energy sources, including fossil fuel and coal, won’t last forever. By developing sustainable power options such as solar and wind power, we can ensure that our children – and their children – will have a viable power source for the future. By putting wind power to work, Silk Soymilk is doing our part to help.
Wind Makes Sense
- Wind power is clean. More wind power means less smog, toxic pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
- Wind power is affordable. Many utility companies offer you the option to purchase wind-generated electricity for around 2 - 2.5 cents per kilowatt. At that price, the average household could obtain 25 percent of its electricity from wind for just $4 or $5 dollars extra per month.
- Wind power is inexhaustible. The total amount of electricity that could potentially be generated from wind power in the United States has been estimated at 10,777 billion kWh annually - three times the electricity generated in the US today.
- Wind power is domestic. The U.S. has abundant wind power right in our own backyard, like the rural areas of the Great Plains. Wind power brings jobs and income, which helps revitalize rural communities and bolsters farm incomes against bad weather.
