Allergies and Dietary Restrictions

Are Silk products dairy-free?

All Silk products including Silk Creamer and Silk Live!™ soy yogurt are completely dairy-free and safe for people with dairy allergies. All of our ingredients and flavorings are made without animal products, by-products or derivatives. Please see our Products section to find detailed nutrition information. Those with severe allergies should always consult a doctor before introducing a new food.

Can I use Silk products if I am allergic to dairy?

A dairy allergy is an extreme sensitivity to the proteins in dairy products and should not be confused with lactose intolerance, which is difficulty digesting the naturally occurring sugar in milk. Dairy allergies can range from mild indigestion to anaphylaxis, which is life-threatening.

All Silk products are dairy-free, lactose-free and casein-free. Those with severe allergies should always consult a doctor before introducing a new food.

Can I use Silk products if I am lactose intolerant?

Absolutely. All Silk products are naturally lactose-free.

Are Silk products okay for people with wheat and gluten allergies?

There is no wheat, wheat gluten, rye, oats, barley or malt in Silk soymilk, Silk Live! soy yogurt or Silk Creamer. Those with severe allergies should always consult a doctor before introducing a new food.

Are Silk products vegan?

Yes, completely! There are no animal derivatives in our products. The lactic acid and live cultures used in Silk Live! soy yogurt come from a vegetable source. All vitamins used to fortify Silk soymilk are also vegetable-derived. The calcium used to fortify Silk soymilk comes from limestone.

Are the specially fortified Silk products vegetarian?

Absolutely! Like all of our products, Silk Heart Health and Silk Omega-3 DHA & Calcium are vegetarian. In fact, all Silk products are purely vegan, containing no animal products of any kind.

Are Silk products kosher?

All Silk products in all flavors are certified Kosher OU-D. Kosher OU-D certifies that our dairy-free product was heated on equipment also used for dairy, but does not indicate the presence of dairy in the product.

Because Silk products are dairy-free, why is the Kosher certification OU-D?

All Silk products are completely dairy-free and safe for people with dairy allergies. While Silk soy products do not contain dairy ingredients, they may be produced on equipment that also produces dairy products. Silk follows strict allergen-cleanup procedures to ensure that products made on shared equipment are dairy-free.

Storage and Freshness

How long will Silk products stay fresh?

Unopened Silk Soymilk will keep fresh in your refrigerator until the date stamped on the top of the carton. Once opened, Silk will stay fresh for seven to ten days if kept refrigerated. It is not unusual for Silk to remain good past the ten-day mark; however, we only guarantee that it will be good for seven to ten days.

Silk Shelf Stable soymilk does not need to be refrigerated until it has been opened. Silk Shelf Stable soymilk will stay fresh unopened until the date stamped on the carton, usually up to one year from the date of purchase. Once opened, Silk Shelf Stable soymilk ages just like regular Silk Soymilk and must be refrigerated to stay fresh for seven to ten days.

Can I freeze Silk soymilk?

We do not recommend freezing Silk for storage. Although freezing does not affect the safety or nutritional value of the product, frozen-then-thawed Silk is dramatically inferior in texture.

Silk can perform well in frozen-dessert recipes calling for soymilk, such as soy ice cream or Silk Granita.

Are Silk products pasteurized?

Yes. We use UHT (Ultra-High Temperature) pasteurization to ensure that our products are free of harmful microorganisms.

What does shelf-stable mean and how is it different from regular Silk soymilk?

Shelf-stable containers are sterile and hermetically sealed, much like canned foods. This allows them to be kept in storage without refrigeration. They are great for stocking your pantry or taking on a trip. Once opened, shelf-stable products should be kept refrigerated.

Nutrition

Does Silk Soymilk contain caffeine?

Silk Chocolate is the only Silk flavor with caffeine; 3.6 mg per 8-oz. serving. As a comparison, 1 cup of regular coffee contains 115 to 175 mg of caffeine and 1 cup of decaf coffee contains 3 to 4 mg.

What types of sweeteners do you use?

We use all-natural evaporated cane juice, also called unrefined sugar, as the sweetener in many of our products. Cane juice is produced by pressing the juice out of sugar cane stalks. The juice is evaporated to form sugar crystals. The crystals are then milled once to give them a more even texture.

Evaporated cane juice is different from refined sugar because it takes 50% less production than refined sugar. Because evaporated cane juice does not require as much processing, it can retain more essential vitamins and minerals. Plus, evaporated cane juice has an intense sweetness that allows us to use less of it when sweetening our products.

Do Silk products have omega-3 fatty acids?

Soy provides certain naturally occurring omega-3 essential fatty acids. Because Silk is made from whole soybeans, all Silk products contain these omega-3s. Silk Omega-3 DHA & Calcium also contains added omega-3 DHA, a specific omega-3 that has been linked to a number of health benefits.

Does Silk contain calcium?

Yes, Silk soymilk is an excellent source of calcium, offering at least 20% of the daily recommendation per 8-ounce serving. Studies show that the calcium in Silk is absorbed by the body as readily as dairy calcium.1

Is Silk Heart Health safe for children? What about for consumption during pregnancy?

Silk Heart Health is intended for use by adults with elevated cholesterol, and not intended for children or pregnant women. However, plant sterols are considered GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the FDA. Please consult your healthcare professional if you have questions about whether or not Silk Heart Health is right for you.

Ingredient Sourcing

Where does Silk get its soybeans?

Silk products contain only soybeans grown without genetic engineering, right here in North America. We employ robust quality-testing protocols to detect GMOs, pesticide residue and other potential contaminants. This ensures that our beans meet the highest standards of quality, consistency and safety. In fact, our rigorous standards exceed our industry's regulatory requirements.

The organic soybeans purchased by Silk are certified organic by independent agencies accredited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in compliance with the organic standards set by the National Organic Program (NOP).

Do Silk products contain genetically engineered (GMO) soybeans?

No. At Silk, we use only soybeans produced without the use of genetic engineering or gene manipulation. We aggressively monitor our growers to ensure that our soybeans are of the very best quality. We have comprehensive testing protocols in place to detect GMOs, pesticide residue and other potential contaminants—all of which go above and beyond regulatory requirements. From the time they are planted to when they are manufactured, our beans are tested four times to ensure that they are non-GMO.
